PHILADELPHIA — As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to unfurl their Super Bowl LIX championship banner on Thursday night, a surprising revelation from head coach Nick Sirianni underscores the team’s laser-like focus on the future: “I didn’t know it was banner night,” Sirianni admitted. “We won’t be out for that.” This candid statement encapsulates the prevailing sentiment within the NovaCare Complex – a swift and decisive pivot from past triumphs to the challenges of a new season.

Moving On: A New Season, A New Team

Since the start of training camp, the Eagles have consistently downplayed their second Super Bowl title, and fifth overall, a clear indication of their “last year is last year” mantra. While subtle nods to the Super Bowl LIX victory exist within the facility, they are not overtly celebrated. This deliberate approach reinforces Sirianni’s message to his squad: the slate has been wiped clean.

“I think from the outside, this city and everybody has been talking about it,” Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown commented on the Super Bowl championship and banner raising. “This building has been locked in. We put that to bed long ago. We just ready to go, and that’s over with. A lot of these players didn’t even experience that, so that’s over with.”

A Roster Reimagined: Fresh Faces, Fresh Drive

Brown’s observation rings true. The Eagles’ current 53-man roster features 20 players who were not part of last season’s championship team. Expanding that to include the 12 practice squad members, a significant 32 out of 70 players – or 45.7% of the roster – are new additions. This substantial turnover ensures that a large portion of the team has no emotional attachment to the previous Super Bowl victory, fostering a collective hunger for new achievements.

One such new face is Josh Uche, who, ironically, was on the field for Super Bowl LIX – but in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform. Since joining the Eagles, Uche has noticed the team’s unwavering focus on the present. “The Super Bowl is a thing of the past,” Uche stated. “Just from the workouts that Nick puts up through, to the meetings, to everything. It’s ground zero. Everything is ground zero. It’s a whole new year. It’s crazy.”

Uche, a veteran of Bill Belichick’s rigorous Patriots camps, even acknowledged the intensity of the Eagles’ preseason. “This was a tough training camp. I’ve been in New England with Bill [Belichick] for years, and this was a tough training camp. You can tell that last year was last year and this is a whole new slate.”

Saquon Barkley: A Glimpse, Then Back to Work

Star running back Saquon Barkley, instrumental in the Eagles’ Super Bowl triumph with an NFL-record 2,504 rushing yards (including playoffs) and becoming only the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a regular season, understands the significance of the banner. Yet, his gaze, like his teammates’, is firmly fixed on the future. “It’s gonna be cool, but not really gonna have too much time to really focus on that,” Barkley said. “You’ll see it, probably put a smile on your face but then it’s right back to work and focus what matters most, and try to put another banner up there.”

The Eagles’ commitment to a fresh start will be immediately tested in their season opener against division rival Dallas. Despite the Cowboys being without key defensive presence Micah Parsons, Philadelphia is not taking anything for granted. “The game’s gonna be closer than what you think,” Brown cautioned. “Regardless of what the score was in the past, those games are one of our most physical games. We know they’re gonna bring it, but they also do a lot of good things on defense. It’s definitely gonna be a challenge in Week 1.”
