Manchester United’s highly anticipated £74 million summer signing, Benjamin Šeško, faces a challenging debut season at Old Trafford, according to former Red Devils striker Louis Saha. The Slovenia international, brought in from RB Leipzig to bolster United’s attacking options, is yet to open his account after four appearances for the club.
Saha Highlights Lack of Midfield Support
Saha, who made 124 appearances for United, voiced his concerns on The Athletic FC Podcast, attributing Šeško’s potential struggles to a lack of support from midfield. “I think he’s capable if the manager managed to get that link between midfield and striker,” Saha stated. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get the midfielder we wanted. So we’re still very weak in that department. And this is why I think Šeško will struggle maybe a little bit until we get that sorted.”
Šeško arrived with a formidable reputation, having netted 39 goals across two seasons with Leipzig and being touted for superstardom from a young age. However, the transition to the Premier League, coupled with United’s midfield deficiencies, could prove a significant hurdle.
Quality is There, But Context is Key
Despite his reservations, Saha remains confident in Šeško’s individual abilities. “He’s got the quality because he’s tall, he’s going to score goals in the air, and he’s very technical as well. All his movement is is right up there, so I’m very confident he’s going to get chances and he’s going to score,” he added.
However, the former France international emphasized that the onus for United’s overall success won’t solely rest on Šeško’s shoulders. “But to get us where we want, I don’t think that’s going to be on him. Those two playmakers, [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo, will have to kick on very soon, [otherwise] you will see Šeško struggling as well.”
Midfield Concerns Persist for Red Devils
While United’s attacking line-up, featuring Cunha and Mbeumo in advanced roles, has shown glimpses of promise, the failure to secure a central midfielder remains a significant concern. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba was reportedly a primary target, but a deal proved unfeasible.
Šeško has made four appearances for United so far, with three of those coming from the bench, and is yet to find the back of the net. The 22-year-old will be eager to prove Saha wrong and quickly establish himself as a prolific goalscorer for the Red Devils.
