Steelers’ Defensive Line Shuffle: Daniel Ekuale Steps Up in Week 3 Win

Rate this post

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive line underwent significant adjustments in their Week 3 victory over the New England Patriots, and one new face saw a notable increase in playing time. Defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale, a recent addition, received more snaps at nose tackle, a move that paid dividends for the Steelers’ defense.

The increased role for Ekuale came at the expense of Keeanu Benton, who has reportedly been underperforming. This strategic shift during the third game aimed to inject new energy and effectiveness into the defensive front, and the results were encouraging.

Tomlin Addresses Defensive Line Rotation

When questioned about the change, Head Coach Mike Tomlin downplayed it as a direct demotion for Benton, instead framing it as a natural consequence of game flow and snap count. “We weren’t getting off on third downs, we end up playing a lot of snaps, and so you can view it as an uptick in someone’s participation,” Tomlin explained. “If we’re getting off on third down, there may be less snaps, and you may be asking me why we’re not playing him. He’s been in uniform every game, oftentimes his level of participation has been dictated at times by the snap totality.”

Despite Tomlin’s explanation, the Steelers’ inability to stop the Patriots on third down was a glaring issue, contributing to the close 21-14 final score, even with the defense forcing five turnovers. This defensive struggle, coupled with Benton’s recent form and early-season injury concerns for the Steelers, suggests Ekuale could see more playing time as the season progresses.

Ekuale’s Potential Impact and Competition

Ekuale offers significant upside at the defensive tackle position. If he continues to impress, he will find himself competing for snaps alongside veteran Pro Bowler Cam Heyward and promising rookie first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon. While getting off the field on third down is a primary defensive goal, a more efficient defense might paradoxically limit Ekuale’s opportunities if the snap count decreases.

Despite the potential for Ekuale to earn more playing time, the Steelers have historically been deliberate in making personnel changes. An immediate shift in the starting lineup is unlikely. However, if Benton’s struggles persist, Ekuale’s increased role could become more permanent.
