Packers Announce Roster Moves, Hardman’s Departure

The Green Bay Packers officially announced Hardman’s release as part of a series of roster adjustments. General Manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed the transactions on Tuesday:

“The Green Bay Packers have signed T Brant Banks to the active roster from the practice squad, signed WR Jakobie Keeney-James to the practice squad and released WR Mecole Hardman from the practice squad.”

Brant Banks, an undrafted free agent from Rice, has been elevated from the practice squad, while Jakobie Keeney-James joins the practice squad. Hardman, who had initially signed with the Packers this past offseason, was cut before the regular season, brought back to the practice squad, and now finds himself released again without playing a single snap for Green Bay.

A Journey Through Jets and Chiefs

Hardman’s career has been a fascinating one, marked by significant highs and unexpected detours. After a successful stint with the Kansas City Chiefs where he became a key offensive weapon, he signed with the New York Jets in 2023. His time in New York, however, was brief, appearing in just five games before being traded back to the Chiefs.

It was upon his return to Kansas City that Hardman etched his name into Super Bowl lore, catching the game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. He remained with the Chiefs for the rest of that season, playing in 12 games before an injury sidelined him late in the year.

Could a Jets Reunion Be in the Cards?

Now a free agent once more, the question arises: where will Mecole Hardman land next? At just 27 years old, Hardman still possesses valuable talent and experience. He boasts three seasons with over 530 receiving yards and three seasons with four or more touchdowns, demonstrating his ability to be a productive offensive asset.

Given the New York Jets’ current thin receiver room and their recent trend of acquiring players under 30, a reunion on the practice squad could be a logical move. Hardman’s six years of NFL experience, coupled with his invaluable playoff and Super Bowl pedigree, could provide a much-needed boost and veteran presence to a young receiving corps. For a team looking to add depth and proven talent, offering a practice squad spot to a player of Hardman’s caliber seems like a low-risk, high-reward proposition.
