A Nod to Ancestry: Rooney’s Irish Roots

The connection between the Steelers and Ireland runs deep, quite literally. Team founder Art Rooney was the proud great-grandson of Irish immigrants who settled in Canada, establishing a foundational link that continues to resonate with the franchise. This profound heritage is now being celebrated on an international stage, as the NFL expands its global footprint.

Gaelic Jerseys: A Unique Cultural Exchange

On Friday, ahead of their highly anticipated game against the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park in Dublin, the Steelers unveiled a special gesture that captivated fans and celebrated local culture. Players took to the practice field adorned in jerseys that featured the Irish-language translations of their last names.

“Adam Regan, with our equipment department, had a great idea to celebrate Irish heritage through our players wearing these shirts for practice that have their last names on the back in Gaelic,” explained Pittsburgh executive Dan Rooney, Art’s grandson, via Teresa Varley of the team’s official website. “So, it’s a neat thing for our players to learn more about Irish culture, but also for the Irish American football fans and Irish Steelers fans alike to see (linebacker) T.J. Watt wearing a shirt with his name in Gaelic on the back. I just think it was a really neat idea.”

The Art of Translation: From Rodgers to Mac Ruairí

The intricate task of translating the players’ names into Gaelic was handled by Aedin Ni Bhrianin, an employee of the Munster Gaelic Athletic Association. This meticulous work brought a unique linguistic twist to the team’s identity. For instance, quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ jersey proudly displayed “Aaron Mac Ruairí,” offering a fascinating glimpse into the rich phonetics of the Irish language.
