Barcelona Confirms Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys for PSG Clash, Camp Nou Return Delayed

Barcelona’s highly anticipated return to Camp Nou for their UEFA Champions League campaign has been further delayed. The Catalan giants have confirmed they will host defending European champions Paris Saint-Germain on October 1st at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, extending their more than two-year absence from their spiritual home.

Another Setback for Camp Nou Comeback

Fans and the club alike had harbored hopes of a Camp Nou homecoming for such a significant European fixture. However, this latest announcement marks another setback in the extensive renovation project that began after the 2022-23 season. Initial predictions suggested a return as early as November 2024, a timeline that has clearly not materialized.

The decision to play at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, located on Montjuïc, means Barcelona will continue their temporary residency in the “hollow concrete bowl” that has served as their home for the past two seasons. This temporary move has been necessitated by the ongoing work at Camp Nou, a project designed to modernize and expand one of football’s most iconic stadiums.

Domestic Flexibility, European Rigidity

While La Liga has shown some flexibility regarding Barcelona’s domestic venues, allowing them to host their first home game of the current campaign at the 6,000-capacity Estadi Johan Cruyff (the women’s team’s usual venue), UEFA regulations are far stricter. The tiny Cruyff venue falls significantly short of the capacity requirements for a Champions League fixture, leaving the club with no option but to utilize the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys for their European encounters.

“The Club continues to work intensively to obtain the necessary administrative permits for the opening of Spotify Camp Nou in the near future,” a Barcelona statement read. “FC Barcelona thanks its members and fans for their understanding and support during such a complex and exciting process as the return to the new Spotify Camp Nou.”

Hopes for a Mid-Phase Return

UEFA regulations typically insist that a team must play all four of their home league-phase fixtures at the same venue. However, reports suggest Barcelona is hopeful of finding some “wiggle room” in this ruling. The visit of Olympiacos on October 21st has been put forward as a potential return date to Camp Nou, with UEFA’s official website currently listing the iconic stadium as the venue for that fixture. This glimmer of hope offers a beacon for fans eager to experience European nights back at their true home.

Should Barcelona successfully navigate the initial round of fixtures, they would be permitted to change their home venue ahead of the knockout rounds. The playoffs commence on February 17, 2025, with the Round of 16 kicking off on March 10. This provides a clear target for the club to complete the necessary renovations and secure the permits required for a full-scale return to the new Spotify Camp Nou.

Looking Ahead

While the delay is undoubtedly frustrating for Barcelona’s loyal fanbase, the club remains committed to delivering a state-of-the-art stadium. The temporary inconvenience is a necessary step in the grand vision for Camp Nou’s future, ensuring it remains a world-class venue for decades to come. The clash against PSG, despite being held at a temporary home, will still be a monumental European encounter, and the team will be eager to perform well as they await their triumphant return to their iconic stadium.
