Chelsea’s Injury Woes Deepen: Essugo Sidelined, Caicedo a Concern

Chelsea’s start to the 2025-26 season has been marred by an unfortunate string of injuries, with midfielder Dário Essugo becoming the latest casualty. The 20-year-old sustained a knock while on international duty with Portugal’s U21 squad during the recent September break, adding to manager Enzo Maresca’s growing list of unavailable players.

Essugo’s International Setback

Essugo, a promising £18.5 million ($23.9 million) summer signing from Sporting CP, was called up to represent his nation but has since been forced to withdraw. The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the injury, stating, “The Chelsea midfielder was excused from training due to a muscle problem in his right thigh, which he suffered after training on Monday. The athlete was evaluated by the Portuguese Football Federation’s Health and Performance Department on Tuesday morning and was declared unavailable.”

While Essugo is not expected to play a major role in his debut season at Stamford Bridge, having only featured for 38 minutes across three appearances in Chelsea’s successful Club World Cup campaign, his absence further stretches the squad. His primary role this season was anticipated to be providing crucial cover for key midfielders.

Mounting Injury List for Maresca

This latest blow comes at a challenging time for Maresca, who is already grappling with significant absences. Defender Levi Colwill is sidelined with an ACL tear, and talismanic forward Cole Palmer has missed the last two Premier League outings due to a groin issue. The club’s proactive summer transfer window, which saw 10 new additions, was largely aimed at bolstering squad depth to cope with a more demanding schedule following their Champions League qualification last season. However, these early injuries are testing that depth sooner than anticipated.

Caicedo’s Precautionary Absence

Adding to the midfield concerns is the fitness of Moisés Caicedo. The Ecuador international sat out his country’s first game during the international break and was seen training with a brace around his knee. While this initially sparked worry among fans, reports suggest his absence was largely precautionary rather than a direct result of a serious injury.

Indeed, local sources indicate that Caicedo is expected to return to Ecuador’s starting lineup for their more crucial fixture against Argentina, following a recent goalless draw with Paraguay. This news will undoubtedly come as a relief to Chelsea fans, as Caicedo is a pivotal figure in Maresca’s midfield plans.

Looking Ahead

As the Premier League season progresses, Maresca will be keen to get his full squad fit and firing. The early injury setbacks highlight the demanding nature of top-flight football and the importance of squad depth. While Essugo’s injury is a blow, the potential return of Caicedo will provide some comfort as Chelsea navigates a challenging schedule.
