Liverpool FC has secured the long-term future of forward Cody Gakpo, with the Dutch international signing a new, extended contract at Anfield. Despite his previous deal, signed upon his arrival in January 2023, still having several years left, this new commitment underscores the club’s profound faith in the versatile attacker.

A Testament to Faith and Performance

Gakpo’s initial contract was set to run until 2028, meaning this extension ensures his presence at Anfield for at least another four years, with the exact duration undisclosed by the reigning Premier League champions. Since joining from PSV Eindhoven, Gakpo has been a significant contributor, tallying 42 goals in 131 appearances for the Reds.

Speaking to LiverpoolFC.com, a delighted Gakpo expressed his sentiments: “It feels amazing to extend the contract here at this beautiful club. I’m very grateful and hopefully I can give back many more beautiful moments.”

He further elaborated on his decision, emphasizing the importance of his personal comfort and family’s happiness: “I feel at home, my family feels at home and that’s also a big decision always. They feel good. I’m very happy at the club, a good group, good teammates, so the life around the football itself is very good and I enjoy every moment of it. I’m very grateful that I can extend.”

Eyes on More Silverware

Gakpo’s ambitions align perfectly with Liverpool’s winning mentality. Having already secured Premier League and Carabao Cup honours, he is eager for more. “I think we have a very good squad at the moment and we’re trying to build on something special again,” he stated. “Obviously last season we won the league, so we have to defend it with the best of our capabilities. We want to also win the Champions League and the other cups, so that’s what we are going for.”

For Gakpo personally, continuous improvement is key. “For me personally, I think I’d like to keep on developing, so every year has to be a better year than the year before. That’s what we’re aiming for.”

A Renewed Role Under Arne Slot

Gakpo’s future at Liverpool appeared somewhat uncertain during Jürgen Klopp’s final season, where he was often used as a substitute in Premier League matches. However, the arrival of new manager Arne Slot has seen a significant shift. In the 2024-25 season, Gakpo has firmly established himself as a regular starter on the left flank.

This renewed confidence was further solidified by Liverpool’s willingness to consider selling Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich earlier this summer, a clear indication of the club’s trust in Gakpo’s ability to excel in a prominent role. This decision signals a strategic move to build around key players like Gakpo, ensuring a strong foundation for future successes under Slot’s leadership.
