The Los Angeles Dodgers, a franchise synonymous with grand ambitions and even grander investments, are once again at the forefront of MLB’s rumor mill. As they fiercely contend for the National League West title, whispers suggest they are positioning themselves to land another marquee talent, potentially from the American League.

Following their unprecedented acquisition of two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers have proven their willingness to spend big. Now, their gaze appears to be fixed on Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, a player whose future in Canada remains uncertain amidst complex contract negotiations.
Blue Jays’ Contract Conundrum
The Toronto Blue Jays have been navigating a challenging period with their star players. While they successfully secured Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a substantial extension, the focus now shifts to Bo Bichette. Securing Bichette, a cornerstone of their infield, will be no easy feat, particularly given his expected high demands in the upcoming offseason.
Dodgers Enter the Fray for Bo Bichette
This is precisely where the Dodgers, known for their financial prowess and strategic player acquisitions, could make a significant move. Bo Bichette, though unlikely to command a contract in the realm of his teammate Guerrero Jr.’s $500 million, is still projected to secure a deal approaching $200 million this offseason.

Christopher Kline of FanSided has identified the Dodgers as a prime candidate to pursue Bichette in free agency. “MLB does not need a salary cap. The system is not ‘broken’ in the way cheap, small-market owners would have you believe. But if there’s anything we know about the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2026, it’s that their resources are endless and their sights will be set on just about any available star,” Kline wrote. “We’ve already heard the Dodgers tossed around as a potential sleeper for Kyle Tucker and his $400 million-plus salary. Bichette might be a more realistic target.”
Addressing Infield and Outfield Needs
The Dodgers’ potential interest in Bichette isn’t just about adding another star; it’s about strategically addressing evolving team needs. With Mookie Betts currently playing shortstop, and his performance at a career low point, a move to the outfield could be beneficial for both Betts and the team.

The outfield, in particular, requires a “facelift,” as the signing of Michael Conforto has not yielded the desired results. Installing Bichette as the full-time shortstop would allow Betts to transition to left field, potentially revitalizing his offensive output and solidifying the defensive alignment alongside Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, and Hyeseong Kim.
A Desirable Destination
While the Dodgers will undoubtedly exercise financial prudence, even with their vast resources, the allure of Los Angeles remains unmatched. “Los Angeles may ultimately balk at Bichette’s asking price – even the Dodgers need to be smart with their spending – but there isn’t a more desirable destination in MLB,” Kline added.

Securing Bichette would provide the Dodgers with a long-term solution at shortstop, potentially for the next five to ten years, while allowing Betts to return to a more comfortable outfield role. However, outbidding the Blue Jays, a team with significant financial backing, will be a formidable challenge.

As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on Bo Bichette and whether he chooses to remain with the Toronto Blue Jays or test the waters of free agency, where the Los Angeles Dodgers loom as a powerful, intriguing suitor.
