Emiliano Martínez’s Manchester United Dream Dashed: Scaloni Reveals Goalkeeper’s Reaction

Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, is “happy” despite his highly anticipated transfer to Manchester United failing to materialize. The Aston Villa shot-stopper had expressed a strong desire to move, but the Old Trafford club ultimately pursued a different direction in their summer recruitment.

Martínez’s desire to depart Aston Villa became increasingly evident towards the end of last season, culminating in what many interpreted as an emotional farewell to the club’s faithful supporters. Manchester United were reportedly keeping their options open regarding a new goalkeeper, but ultimately opted to secure the services of promising Belgian talent Senne Lammens instead. Ironically, Villa themselves had been monitoring Lammens as a potential successor to Martínez.

Scaloni Offers Insight into Martínez’s Mindset

Speaking at a press conference, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni provided an update on his star goalkeeper’s spirits following the transfer window’s conclusion.

“Emi is fine. In the end, his transfer didn’t happen, but [Tuesday] was his birthday and I saw him happy,” Scaloni told reporters. “Of course, he must have been excited about the idea of playing for Manchester United, as people have said, but he’s a positive kid. He’s already focused on us, and when he returns to his club, he’ll be focused on them. I saw him well.”

Martínez had served an opening day suspension for a red card received at Old Trafford on the final day of last season. He featured in Villa’s subsequent game against Brentford but was conspicuously absent from the squad for last weekend’s defeat to Crystal Palace as speculation surrounding his future intensified. He has since joined the Argentina national team for international duty.

The Lammens Twist: A Childhood Dream Fulfilled

Reports suggested that Aston Villa had tabled a more lucrative offer to Royal Antwerp for Lammens than Manchester United. However, the young goalkeeper himself harbored a lifelong ambition to join the Red Devils, a factor that ultimately swayed his decision.

“When I was five [in 2007], United was at the height of football and you keep in your memory how big Manchester United is, so, when I heard they were interested, it was like a childhood dream,” Lammens explained, highlighting the enduring allure of the Premier League giants.
