The football world was abuzz when Rasmus Højlund, despite his public declarations of commitment, made a surprising move to Napoli. Now, a former Manchester United teammate has shed light on the dressing room’s reaction to the Danish striker’s departure, revealing a palpable sense of “shock” among the squad.

Højlund’s Unwavering Desire to Stay

Throughout the summer, Højlund had been unequivocal about his future. “I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United,” he stated firmly in early June. This stance remained unchanged even after United’s significant investments in Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who arrived for a combined £133.5 million ($176.2 million).

“My plan is very clear, that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens,” Højlund insisted in late July. “Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I’m more than ready.”

A Sudden Turn of Events

However, the arrival of Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško for an initial £66.3 million in August dramatically altered the landscape. Manager Ruben Amorim subsequently dropped Højlund from the matchday squads, signaling an end to his Old Trafford tenure.

Dorgu’s Revelation: “A Bigger Shock”

Patrick Dorgu, Manchester United’s wingback and a close friend of Højlund, expressed the squad’s surprise. While the departure of fellow Dane Christian Eriksen, whose contract expired in June, was anticipated, Højlund’s exit struck a different chord.

“That’s how it is in football,” Dorgu told reporters ahead of Denmark’s World Cup qualifier with Scotland. “You never know when it’s your turn to move on. We knew it would happen to Christian, but it was perhaps a bigger shock that Rasmus had to move on. I talked to him a lot during the process and could sense which way it was going. Hopefully, we will now see each other every time on the national team.”

A New Chapter in Naples: “A Lot to Prove”

Upon his arrival at reigning Serie A champions Napoli, Højlund acknowledged the weight of expectation. “I come with a lot to prove,” he conceded. The 22-year-old will spend the current season on loan with Antonio Conte’s side, with his move set to become permanent next summer for a pre-agreed fee of £38.2 million.

This transfer marks a pivotal moment in Højlund’s career, offering him a fresh start to demonstrate his immense talent on a new stage. The football world will be watching closely to see how he adapts to the challenges of Italian football and whether he can truly fulfill his potential with the Azzurri.
