As the NFL trade deadline approaches, the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be shifting their focus from offensive firepower to defensive reinforcement. A recent report from a prominent NFL insider suggests the Steelers are prioritizing shoring up their injury-riddled and underperforming defense over acquiring another wide receiver.
ESPN insider Dan Graziano revealed in a column ahead of Week 4 that Pittsburgh has “pivoted a bit” from its earlier pursuit of a wideout. “If they make an in-season move, it would more likely be to help their struggling defense,” Graziano stated, highlighting a significant strategic shift for the organization.

From Receiver Hunt to Defensive Needs
Earlier in the offseason, the Steelers were actively seeking to bolster their wide receiver depth, a unit top-heavy with stars like DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III. Despite striking out on several targets, they recently signed Isaiah Hodgins to their practice squad, potentially seeing him as a future contributor.
The defense, on the other hand, was perceived as a strength heading into the season. The Steelers made significant moves, trading for star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, signing Darius Slay Jr. and Brandin Echols, and drafting defensive lineman Derrick Harmon in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Key veterans T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward, and DeShon Elliott also received extensions or reworked contracts, signaling a commitment to their defensive core.

Defensive Struggles and Injury Woes
However, the early season results have been far from ideal. Through three games, the Steelers’ defense has struggled, allowing the fifth-most yards (386.0) and 11th-most points (25.7) per contest. While they delivered a clutch performance with five turnovers in a Week 3 win against the New England Patriots, consistency has been an issue.

Injuries have compounded the problem. Derrick Harmon missed the first two games with an MCL sprain, and Nick Herbig was sidelined in Week 1 due to a hamstring injury. DeShon Elliott and Joey Porter Jr. haven’t played since the season opener. Additionally, Alex Highsmith sustained an ankle sprain in Week 2 and will miss the upcoming matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland. Linebackers Malik Harrison and Isaiahh Loudermilk are also on the reserve/injured list.
High Investment, Low Return
The Steelers boast the most expensive defense in the league, with a staggering $163,660,178 committed, according to Over The Cap. Despite this significant investment, the unit is not currently delivering the expected return. If the defensive struggles persist or the injury bug continues to bite, the front office could be compelled to make a move before the November 4 trade deadline.

This strategic pivot underscores the fluid nature of NFL team building and the immediate impact of injuries. While the Steelers initially aimed to bolster their offense, the reality of their defensive performance and mounting injuries has forced a reevaluation of their priorities as the trade deadline looms.
